There’s always a choice.

Friday, June 15, 2007

Finally, a break from desperately trying to wake my brain, which, I have now accepted, is still in vacation. I have been slaving for today over forty to fifty pages of the book, which the professor himself authored,  for the recitation tomorrow morning.

I can just imagine, four hours of constant Divine Intervention, hoping every time he calls for another, my name won't be called next. I'd be doing occasional glances at my watch, until these most awaited words shall become music to my ears — "We'll start from there and see you next meeting." (Or something to that effect.

So back to reality, I am still in the middle of a battle, to continue on studying, er memorizing, the substantial parts of the book, which is practically every part of every page, sheesh. Or, to just give in to the call of the comfort of my bed, and not to attend class tomorrow.

Perhaps, a little distraction would help.

Last night, we saw FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER.

And, please excuse me if I suddenly start to drool…

But CHRIS EVANS (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), is just too HOT!

*Sigh*

Need I say more?

*Sigh*

Goodness! I could just sit here for so long and just go through any or even ALL of his pictures over the net! But, of course, that would not solve anything at the moment! Waaaaaaaah!

So, with HUNKY YUMMY AND OH SO HOT CHRIS EVANS aside, I must now consider the problem at hand.

And after weighing my options, the most-often-than-not-feeling-guilty-to-be-absent part of me would much rather go through the torment of the night ahead and face my fate tomorrow.

Yeah, I am such a goody-goody.

But then again, it's just almost 7pm.

I am still entitled to change my mind…

again…

and again…

and yet again.

I am, after all, part of the female race. :D

Ha ha.

Idle Time Online

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

While checking updates from my Multiply site, and clicking on a link posted by a contact, I found this quiz:

What's Your Comfort Zone?

And got this result:

Rjil, you're in your comfort zone when you're the Close Compadre!

You really know how to connect with friends when you're one-on-one. Flitting from place to place isn't your style. Why waste time when you could be spending it with a good pal, or two, or three? Quaint cafés, old-school restaurants, the perfect bar stools at the corner bar — they're all great places for good food, fun, and conversation. Sure, there are times to fight the crowds at a sweltering party. But you'd probably rather spend time talking about the deeper issues in life and developing the kind of connections with friends that last a lifetime. After all, isn't that what friends like you are for?

Should we find you at a large party, we'd bet that you'd be the one chatting to someone on the couch or hitting the dance floor with your good friends. We'd also guess, though, that you'd prefer to be at a smaller gathering with your close crew of friends. Spending quality time with your clan is key for you whether that involves playing board games, talking until dawn, or just hanging out.

Ha ha ha.  I'd let my friends be the judge.

Anyhoo, knowing myself (really? :P ), I'd say it's a bull's-eye. :)

Wanna know yours? Click the link above and see for yourself!

If you'd rather not, there are still more tests to choose from. :)

things that made my week

Sunday, June 10, 2007

  1. Decluttered my place!   The second one this year, next to my decluttering session last holy week. And this time, it just took me a whole day! Thanks to my ever so dependable better half. Stuff were moved around, which gave a new look to my room! And the bathroom, thanks to him, is spic and span.
  2. A day of pampering. Spent half a day at the salon and got my hair professionally treated and trimmed (it had been longing for a long time), and got a foot spa and a pedicure. My better half had to stay with me so he gave in to the temptation of a new haircut, hot oil, and a foot spa as well. Yeah, once in a while a professional pampering wouldn’t hurt even for my man.
  3. Visited my preggy friend. Yeah, it’s been a long time since we last saw each other. Since, I missed her wedding and her baby shower (due to circumstances beyond my control) seeing her entering into a new milestone is such a pleasant surprise! I couldn’t imagine how blooming she was. Very happy and very satisfied.
  4. First day of classes. Well, this fact did not really make my week. It ’s just one of the highlights since I got to see the people at school again. And what a way to start off the school year, I had to peel myself off the bed and yet the professor came in late. And he didn’t waste much time - discussed and lectured during the first day. *sigh*
  5. Shopping! Brought about by Raul’s obsession over a new pair of basketball shoes and running shoes, and heeding the advice of friends of SALEs at Glorietta, off we went. And after over four hours of having to check each and every shoe store there is with a sale, and a number of times of trips around, back-and-forth and around again, he was able to purchase these pairs.

  6. Two new peep-toe flats!     One in white and one in green with white and brown trimmings. Caught my eye in one of our return trips to Toby’s, in a boutique just outside. And I got it for a very cheap price! Definitely a fab find for me! No time to window shop since we were like in the Amazing Race at the pace we were running around Glorietta, looking for the best buy of his shoes, and these pairs definitely made my so tiring day. Did I mention I was planning to buy a bag? He he he. Too tired to again walk around after Raul made his purchases, that was when I was to go look for my bag. But my feet and head are killing me. I decided we go on home, and as soon as I got to bed, I dozed off. He he.

  • Lesson learned: Men are worse than women in shopping, when shopping for shoes. Correct me if I’m wrong. Just a hasty generalization :)
  • In retrospect, I still don’t have a new bag! *sigh*
  • In ROSY retrospect, I have my two new peep-toe pumps! *grin*

Instant Bliss

Where is your spirit craving to take you to?

The Edge of This World

Right now you are craving to be away from your busy atmosphere and just relax someplace that will nourish you. You wouldn’t mind being around people but you need a break and not to think about your problems. You have an affectionate and helping nature that often gets you into giving too much of yourself. You are going to feel fulfilled when you find a place that lets you unwind and rejuvenate your spirit so you can be ready to go and overcome you troubles.

And the body soooooo totally agrees.

Since classes start on Saturday, and a lot of errands and work to do, craving needs to wait.

O well, I'll just splash water on my face.

That'll do for the meantime, though, quite a pitiful resort compared to the feel of the sand in ur toes while the water breaks in your calves while walking along the shore on a sunset… Aaaaack! The picture is so vivid in my mind. Self-induced torture! Stop me!

Must defer gratification. I shall enjoy it more than I crave for it now. At least I have something to look forward to. And nothing to worry about right after. Worry-free vacation. Such a selfish indulgence. Hmm….

Empathize with me. Try the quiz! See for yourself :)

"You can’t have your cake and eat it too. "

Saturday, June 2, 2007

Earlier in the day, a friend was updating me about her relationship, rather, "almost-relationship" issues which in all likelihood would turn to a bitter end. The plot had thickened. At least, I was hopeful enough to see it coming back to the "friend zone" stage. The ever-so-stubborn-and-dramatic person that she is, which she openly admits, cannot and would not accept it. She wants all or nothing. After some whining and boohoos, and more drama, I gave her my solicited objective take on the matter. As expected, I made her feel worse.

She must have gone to a lucid interval before the conversation ended. She left me with her usual thought provoking finale (referring definitely to herself):

"You can't have your cake and eat it too."

I've always read of this phrase — novels, stories, articles and the books.

My initial reaction was distaste. Why the heck can't you eat the cake that you have? It's injustice on either part. You have the cake, but you can't eat it. Likewise, it defeats the purpose of the cake itself — it's supposed to be appetizingly attractive enough to be eaten, then it's supposed to be eaten! Of course, it's a figure of speech. You have something which cannot be consumed, used or enjoyed. Undue deprivation, or worse, a self-induced torture, that's how I always saw it.

Then, I was browsing through the net, and stumbled upon this Urban Dictionary site. The top ranking (it got the most most thumbs up sign) definition/interpretation there, to which I agree, says:

This phrase is easier to understand if it is read as "You can't eat your cake, and have it too". Obviously once you've eaten your cake, you won't have it any more. Used for expressing the impossibility of having something both ways, if those two ways conflict.

He works so hard to pay for that fancy house of his that he never has any time to stay home and enjoy it.

Yeah, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Even the Common Errors in English site shares the same approach –

The original and only sensible version of this saying is “You can’t eat your cake and have it too,” meaning that if you eat your cake you won’t have it any more. People get confused because we use the expression “have some cake” to mean “eat some cake,” and they therefore misunderstand what “have” means in this expression.

Whenever conversations, profound as this, arise (yeah, sometimes we like to stimulate brain activity just to check if the neurons still work) as to its interpretation, we always end up cursing wherever or whomever this phrase originated. We even ended up talking psycho-babble b.s. why some person actually came up with this. And as a product of too much idle time, I came up with this from Ask Yahoo!:

The always reliable Phrase Finder explains the origin. A dramatist named John Heywood was the first to use it, at least in the written form. The expression appears in his "A dialogue Conteinyng the Nomber in Effect of All the Prouerbes in the Englishe Tongue," a page-turner from the year 1546. (Please note the fancy Middle English spelling.) Originally, the saying went, "Wolde you bothe eate your cake, and haue your cake?"

Before you answer that question by chowing down, let us explain what Mr. Heywood meant. Basically, he was saying sometimes you have to make a decision and live with the consequences. To "eat your cake and have it too" (the original expression) means you want it both ways. If you eat your cake, you no longer have your cake, because (duh) you already ate it. Hope it tasted good.

So, it turns out, it's all a misconstruction. So whoever translated the Old English version? It was cool of him to have done so as it is written now. One of the brain stimulants discussed over anytime of the day, best discussed over a few beers. He he.

Perhaps, I'm already one of the last to know about this info. Nevertheless, my day (or the rest of it) became productive. :)

WELCOME..

CLEAN SLATE..

FRESH START..

I signed up for this site a couple of months ago, but got lazy setting it up. Thanks to G's new blogsite, and the fact that I already finished my CLED and I have nothing else to do, I started to get busy! And here it is! Though, I know I won't be able to keep this updated, I'd still find time to do so.

So, let's see… what to write…. ?
